Description

Return by Death

Return by Death is a Fabric rollback mod. When an enabled player would die, the death is cancelled and the world is restored to that player’s latest timeline checkpoint.

The mod tracks player state, blocks, block entities, items, mobs, entities, scheduled ticks, weather, time, and related world state to make the rollback feel close to a real rewind.

Features

  • Enabled by default in singleplayer worlds
  • Dedicated server and Open LAN support
  • Multiple Return by Death players at the same time
  • Per-player timeline checkpoints
  • 15 global timeline checkpoints, with up to 4 owned checkpoints per player
  • Immediate initial checkpoint when the world becomes safe
  • Automatic checkpoints
  • Manual checkpoints with /rbd checkpoint
  • Manual rewind to the latest checkpoint with /rbd rewind
  • Safe checkpoint checks to avoid saving dangerous moments
  • Combat-safe checkpoint checks to avoid saving active fights
  • Optional short return protection after rollback
  • Optional rollback sound
  • Player inventory, health, hunger, XP, effects, game mode, abilities, and progression rollback
  • Player ender chest, cursor stack, respawn state, cooldowns, and extra vitals rollback
  • Block and block entity rollback
  • Creeper/explosion block rollback
  • Item and mob/entity rollback
  • Mount, passenger, leash, owner, and projectile relation restore
  • Weather, time, scheduled ticks, and world border restore
  • Optional sleep and advancement checkpoints
  • Configurable checkpoint interval, chance, and randomness

Multiplayer

In multiplayer, Return by Death is granted per player.

  • Operators can grant access with /rbd give <player> true
  • Operators can revoke access with /rbd give <player> false
  • /rbd enable and /rbd disable affect only the command sender
  • If one enabled player dies, the world returns to that player’s latest checkpoint
  • Other players are restored to where they were at that checkpoint if they were present in it
  • Offline players with pending restore data are restored when they rejoin

Commands

  • /rbd status
  • /rbd status all
  • /rbd give <player> <true|false>

  • /rbd config randomness <0..120>

Default Config

  • Enabled by default in singleplayer
  • Not granted by default in multiplayer
  • 30 second checkpoint interval
  • Chat checkpoint notifications disabled
  • Safe checkpoints enabled
  • Sleep checkpoints enabled
  • Advancement checkpoints enabled
  • Return protection disabled
  • Rollback sound enabled
  • 100% checkpoint chance
  • 0 seconds randomness

Notes

Safe checkpoints may delay automatic checkpoint creation while the checkpoint owner is airborne, in lava/fire, recently damaged, in active combat, near nearby hostile threats, using an open container, or carrying a cursor item.

/rbd checkpoint force bypasses safety checks. /rbd rewind manually restores the latest checkpoint without needing to die.

Scope

Return by Death supports singleplayer, Open LAN, and dedicated multiplayer servers. Multiplayer support is designed for small groups and uses a shared world timeline with per-player checkpoint ownership.
