Description

Vertigo - Vertical Chunk Sync

Originally created by Builderb0y. Published on CurseForge under MIT license with full credit to the original author.

What it does

By default, Minecraft syncs entire chunks from bottom to top with the client. For tall worlds (Big Globe makes the overworld 1536-2048 blocks tall), this means massive amounts of unnecessary data being sent.

Vertigo solves this by only syncing chunk sections that are vertically near the player. Sections too far above or below are sent as empty air to the client.

Benefits

  • Multiplayer: Drastically reduces bandwidth usage
  • Singleplayer: Reduces client memory usage
  • Zero impact on server-side mechanics (mob spawning, block ticking, redstone)

How it works

The vertical sync distance matches your view distance. A player at Y=64 with a view distance of 12 chunks (192 blocks) will only receive chunk sections between roughly Y=-128 and Y=256.

Requirements

  • Minecraft 1.20.1
  • Fabric Loader
  • Fabric API
  • Must be installed on both client and server
