Description

Better Flight aims to improve vanilla Elytra flight mechanics.

This mod allows you to flap your wings to take off and fly in exchange for hunger, reducing the need for firework rockets.

Features:

  • Elytra Durability is shown on the HUD
  • Easy take-off feature via sprint + double jump (Classic Mode Only)
  • Flap your wings and fly using either the Modern Flight mode or Classic mode. Configurable in the Server Configs
  • Fly close to the ground for greater speed! (Modern mode only)
  • Flare your wings to slow down and land
  • Fireworks are still useful for speed boosts and rapid ascent
  • Flapping and flaring consume flight stamina, which recharges from your hunger bar
  • Optional altitude limits
  • Manage your flight stamina and hunger well, and you can fly until your Elytra's durability runs out!

Controls (Rebindable):

  • Make sure you have an Elytra equipped.
  • In Classic Mode, while sprinting, tap space to jump, then tap space again while in the air to take off.
  • While flying in Classic Mode, tap space to flap your wings and gain a small boost of speed and altitude.
  • In Modern Mode, while flying tap space to flap your wings and launch forward. Try flying while you are close to the ground for a greater speed boost!
  • While flying, hold X to flare your wings. This will slow you down rapidly and make landing easier.
  • Your flight stamina recharges faster while you are on the ground.
  • Press F10 to cycle between locations for the Flight Stamina Meter.
  • Press F8 to enable or disable Better Flight

Modern vs Classic Flight:

  • In v2.0.0, a Modern Flight system was added, enabled by default. When you flap your wings and fly, you boost forward similar to a firework boost.
  • Try boosting while your close to the ground and you'll get greater speed!

Integrations & Configuration:

  • The mod is compatible with most other Elytra mods out of the box.
  • It is curio-aware, and support for additional Elytra items can be added in via the config file
  • The mod is highly configurable, with food costs and most behaviors adjustable in a server-side config which is automatically synchronized to all players in the world.

Recommended Companion Mods (Not Required):

  • Apple Skin -- Makes your saturation visible on the hunger meter, making managing food much more intuitive.
  • Configured -- Provides a simplified, GUI oriented way to edit the configuration settings for all your Forge mods.

Known Issues / Conflicts:

  • Origins for Forge -- Elytra behavior does not get applied to the "Elytrian" origin (but will still work for manually equipped Elytras.)

Upcoming Features:

  • Boost blocks that recharge your flight stamina while midair. Use these for creating long aerial courses!

Will there be a Fabric version?:

Maybe one day. My initial priority is the Forge version. Once I am more familiar with the project, I will consider a fabric port. -ArkVeil

In short, that depends on the community.

I chose Forge when making this for simplicity and compatibility with the other mods I personally use.

I am just a hobbyist when it comes to modding, and my code relies heavily on Forge's infrastructure.

Someone more experienced with Fabric would be the best choice to make a Fabric version.

That's why I use the LGPLv3 license -- All code and assets are free to use in derivative works, as long as such derivative works extend the same courtesy to others. - rejah_tavi

Can I use this in a mod pack?

Absolutely!
